BEAUTY the Guide - November 2017

THISMONTH’S ISSUE L OOK AT THIS NAME CARD. It says Mr Gaultier. They used to say Jean Paul but now that I am old, I am called Mr. Gaultier,” laughs the iconic French fashion designer. I can’t believe I’m sitting beside him in a bistro with a handful of retail executives and representatives from his fragrance partner, Puig. “I like to laugh. Life is meant to have fun,” he says surveying his menu. The first thing you notice about Jean Paul is his laughter. He is a born storyteller and recounts his adventures in fashion and fragrance. His Classique and Le Male scents have become worldwide bestsellers with each seasonal interpretation selling out in weeks. This past summer’s Wonder Woman and Superman editions were two of the most successful summer launches. “When I created my first two scents I was very specific with what I wanted. I knew exactly how I wanted them to smell. Let’s be honest, with everything I do I like to add a little sex. It has to have a little sex to it. But I am not a ‘nose’. So now I leave it to the experts and I just say things like ‘this smells interesting’.” Make no mistake that the concepts and themes are from Gaultier. And he approves each scent. “When I design fashion, I know exactly what I want. It’s different with fragrance.” He tells me a story about how years ago he’d meet his friend Boy George at a Culture Club concert. “He always smelled so good. So I asked him what he was wearing. It was Giorgio Beverly Hills,” he laughs. Today, he collaborates with many pop stars like Kylie Minogue and up-and-coming French artists to create their tour costumes. He is rumoured to have a new perfume coming in 2018. “Oh, it is so exciting. I have so many new projects coming next year. I can’t wait to tell everyone about it.” In the meantime, his limited edition Snow Globe bottles of Classique and Le Male are sure to enchant Gaultier fans. I hope you enjoy this issue. We’ve collected the most exciting fragrance, skincare and makeup launches of the month. The holiday collections arrive this month and they are truly decadent.
